Bunny Farm

A jobless German has been arrested after subsidising his meager income by turning his tiny ninth floor balcony in the capital Berlin into a bunny farm.

Ralf Werner, 45, was found to have 122 rabbits in boxes and cages on the tiny balcony - selling off the baby rabbits to local pet shops and in the newspaper classifieds for 25 euros each.

Ursula Bauer from animal rights group Aktion Tier that was asked to care for the freed rabbits said: "There was barely enough space for two rabbits - never mind 122.

"The rabbits could barely move - and many were in a bad way. He simply fed them and encouraged them to have as many baby rabbits (leverets) as possible.

"There were often fights between the rabbits and many had nasty bite wounds, were underfed and ill.

Werner was banned from keeping animals and also faces a court case for animal cruelty.

He told local media: "I don't know what the fuss is about - they had enough to eat and the chance to do what rabbits like to do best - breed."
