A German BMW designer who kept a wife and child in London and a girlfriend and a child in Munich has gone on trial accused of murdering his German family.
The court heard how Gunnar Doerries, 44, had met his common-law wife who was an aircraft engineer while working on designing the interior of the new Mini for BMW in London in 2002.
But although they had a child together he had then met his second love, Georgina Zito, 30, at a music concert in Stuttgart. He dumped her when she told him she was pregnant with his daughter, Alexandra.
Prosecutor Elisabeth Ehrl said: "Terrified that his first love would find out about his second partner and child, he lured them away on the pretence of a holiday to Portugal and killed them. He hoped that by doing so, he would also save the cost of child support."
He told police that when he had been called back to Germany he had lost his job with BMW but got a second less well paid job with Audi in Ingolstadt that often sent him to work in Stuttgart, where he had met already married but later divorced Georgina in April 2006.
But his problems really started when his London partner decided to move to Munich in February 2008 and became pregnant, and he tried to keep the two women secret from each other.
He said: "Two relationships at the same time, it was the absolute horror."
The court heard that Georgina had filed for child support, and he had invited her to Lagos in the Algarve to discuss rekindling their romance for a five day holiday between 6 and 11 July 2010.
On the last day he took Georgina and put Alexandra, 21-months-old, on a towel on the Praia Do Canavial beach. He then went with Georgina into the water where an eye witnesses reported how he had pushed her under the water. When he saw that he was being watched he fled with the baby in a rental car for 35 kilometres where he then killed the child and wedged its between boulders at a remote spot.
