This newspaper is a time machine, locked in around the time of two World Wars, one World Cup and a lost age when it was permissible to poke fun at Germans.

Marriage Axed

A German man who crept up behind his wife as she slept in a deck chair and split her head in half with an axe is unlikely to face charges. Police say that the wife Sieglinde Bach, 75, had forced her husband Kurt to live in the garden in the shed and fed him on a diet of tinned sausage after he was diagnosed as suffering from Alzheimers. But after years of living in the shed the man had reportedly in a moment of clarity decided to take revenge on his wife and killed her with a single blow before returning to his shed where he was found by police. The couple, both aged 75, had been married for 48 years and lived at the house in Michelau in Bavaria, in south-eastern Germany. The pair have three children and the woman had thrown him out and forced him to live in the garden several years before the incident with the axe. Bach's family claim Sieglinde was dominating and cruel and had made him cut off all contact with his family. Bach's cousin Rolf Gollinger, 69, said: "She did not look after him well. She made him sever all ties with his family. She made him sleep in the shed and didn't feed him, forcing him to eat tinned sausages in his hut that she got cheap at the discount supermarket." Public prosecutor Anton Lohneis, 56, said: "The motive seems to have been their relationship with one another. He feared she wanted to poison him. Bach was arrested in his garden shed where he admitted killing his wife. He was taken to a psychiatric unit where it was confirmed he is suffering from dementia and is unlikely to face charges.
