Mercy Killer Son Jailed
A son who suffocated his mother after she was left severely brain damaged by a horse riding accident has been jailed for three years by judges in Braunschweig, Germany.
Judges heard how the 26-year-old man suffocated his mother with a towel after medical staff at her care home refused his request to stop feeding her by medical drips.
In 2004 his mother had been thrown by her horse and left in a vegetative state by severe head injuries, the court heard.
He told judges he wanted to "release" his mother.
But they ruled he had no right to take her life, and could have sought a court order to shut down her life support system.
Judge Ralf-Michael Polomski said: "It would have been a long and difficult journey but in our society, the protection of life is absolute."
