This newspaper is a time machine, locked in around the time of two World Wars, one World Cup and a lost age when it was permissible to poke fun at Germans.

A dad and his son survived when the two-year-old was sucked out of the door of their camper van and his panicked father jumped after him from a Motorail train at the holiday island of Sylt in Germany.

Torben Bayer, 37, leapt into action when the wind blew open the door of the camper van, sucking his toddler son Mats who had been playing with a ball out the door and onto the side of the track.

The family from Segeberg that included Mats mother Hanna, 32, and his grandparents were travelling on the train from Niebuell to Westerland in Sylt when the accident happened.

Sylt is famous for its 30 miles of sandy beach and is accessible from the German mainland by the Hindenburgdamm, a causeway with the railway line on top.

The mother pulled an emergency stop button when she heard her husband shout as he jumped and the pair were recovered. The dad had a broken shoulder and the two-year-old suffered a fractured skull, a punctured lung and other internal injuries, but he is expected to make a full recovery.

The child's mother was also hospitalised and is being treated for shock.

The boy's grandfather Jens said: "The camper van was parked backwards and was not designed for a wind of 60mph."

Prosecutors are investigating the case.
