Olympics: Tats Too Much

Olympic gymnast Marcel Nguyen has been ordered to cover up his tattoos with make up in London over fears that he'll be penalised for turning off judges.

The German squad member - who has the words "Pain is Temporary - Pride is Forever" tattooed across his chest in large letters - has brought special sweat-proof make up with him to hide the artwork while he competes.

Team leader Sven Karg said: "We decided together that he should cover it up for aesthetic reasons.

"There are no specific reasons, but marks are scored for aesthetics."

German Olympic officials say checks with judges have revealed that Nguyen would not be marked down as long as his tattoos did not carry political or religious messages.

But squad members have agreed on the ban to ensure nothing can cloud the judges' marking decisions.

Nguyen, 21, explained: "I have no problem covering it up. I brought camouflage cover up and that stays on even when I sweat."
