Red faced German tourism chiefs have apologised after local artists literally turned the air blue when they were asked to promote Hamburg.

Red faced German tourism chiefs have apologised after local artists literally turned the air blue when they were asked to promote Hamburg.

Officials had asked designers and artists to submit themed designs to a website to promote the harbour city under the slogan, 'Blue Port.'

But the scheme backfired when one rogue group erected a series of blue fluorescent lights in the harbour's infamous red light district saying in English: "F*** U."

The sign - outside the city's Golden Pudel sex club - has shot to the top of the website's public poll, outstripping entries by professional lighting experts.

One rival, Michael Batz, shrugged: "Art is all about getting a reaction as well and it's great to see the interest that this project raised."

"It isn't quite what we had in mind. It's highly original but we didn't mean to create any offence," said one official.
