Police have recruited specially-trained sniffer dogs that can track down chemicals used to deliberately start fires after a massive rise in insurance claims.
Investigators believe that the credit crunch had led to a huge increase in the number of blazes started by home and business owners so they can cash in on insurance policies.
Now police in Dusseldorf, Germany, have signed up specialist sniffer Sahara, a German Shepherd trained to trace petrol or other chemicals used by arsonists.
"Different circumstances lead to different crimes rising to the top and at the moment we're finding a lot of suspected arson.
"So we have to make sure we have the facilities to investigate it professionally," explained a police spokesman.
One of the squad, Sahara, was in action yesterday (Friday) where she found where chemicals had been used to start a blaze in an apartment block and a shed in the garden where they might have been stored.
"She can save you weeks of ordinary detective work with one sniff," said one officer.
