Beer To Go

German petrol stations have been banned from selling food or drink to anybody not arriving in a car after the country's High Court ruled that they should not get an unfair advantage over other stores that were not legally allowed to stay open 24 hours.

Now the petrol station owners are threatening to close up overnight after saying that they made two thirds of the profit from the sale of food and drink.

Supermarket managers had complained that growing numbers of Germans were wandering to the local petrol station to get milk and other products, and petrol stations had an unfair advantage, as they could stay open all night.

And the court agreed.

It means that a driver can go into a petrol station and buy food and drink including beer and spirits but anybody arriving by cycle or on foot cannot.

Any petrol stations breaking the law by for example selling bottled water to a cyclist faces a fine of up to 400 pounds.

Matthias Rischpler responsible for enforcing the new laws said they would be working with police to make sure the rules were adhered to.
