Pierced Off

A three-year-old girl whose parents took her to a tattoo parlour to get her ears pierced has been awarded 70 GBP by a court in Berlin, Germany, for the pain she suffered.

Judges ordered the studio owner to compensate the youngster after hearing that one of the piercings had been made in the wrong part of her right ear, causing intense pain.

The toddler's parents Michael and Barbara Hartmann- who had sued he studio owner Richard Moser- told the court they'd decided to go ahead with the piercings after their daughter told them she wanted to wear earrings.

But judges criticised the parents saying: "The legality of what they have done to their daughter is questionable and it is doubtful whether they had been acting in the best interests of the child."

Now criminal prosecutors are to examine the files after the judge rapped the tattoo parlour owner for not refusing to carry out the piercings.

Children's medical specialists have called for a ban on all piercings for youngsters.

"Any alteration of the healthy body of a child is problematic. It could lead to severe inflammation. Ear-piercing, tattooing and other forms of piercing, from our point of view, constitute bodily harm," said a spokesman for the German Association of Paediatricians.

The case follows a recent legal ruling in Cologne where judges effectively banned circumcision.

Judges cleared a doctor who had performed the operation on a four-year-old Muslim boy of "physically mistreated another person" because he was unaware of the law.

But their ruling upheld a general ban on future operations, infuriating religious leaders in Jewish and Muslim communities.
