This newspaper is a time machine, locked in around the time of two World Wars, one World Cup and a lost age when it was permissible to poke fun at Germans.

Bin Had

A binman is facing a 12 million GBP compensation bill for a massive rail crash caused when his speeding truck hit an express train in Frankenthal, Germany.

Kai Gaertner, 37, lost control of the rubbish truck and injured 15 passengers when his vehicle rolled into the path of the train.

Judges decided that Gaertner, and not his employers, were responsible for the crash because he was speeding.

Train operators Deutsche Bahn - whose case begins on Monday - say they want compensation for personal injury claims, track damage and repairs to the train.

Gaertner- who has already had to pay a 2,250 GBP fine and 50,000 GBP court costs - said:"The accident has ruined my life."

"I am a nervous wreck. I lost my job and now work as a pizza delivery man.

"Even my lawyer feels sorry for me and has opened a charity account for donations for me," he added.
