You Should Have Run, Rape Judge Tells Victim
A judge has outraged women's rights groups in Germany after telling a girl who was raped when she was a 15-year-old schoolgirl: "You could have run away."
Judge Luise Nunning found a 31-year-old convicted thug not guilty of raping the youngster in Esssen, three years ago.
"You did not make it clear enough that you did not want sex, and you could have run away," she said.
"Something very terrible has happened to you but this is a borderline case," added the judge.
The teenager told the court that the attack happened during a party at the defendant's home after he'd downed six litres of lager and several cannabis joints.
The accused - who denied raping the girl - is currently serving three and a half years behind bars for assaulting a girlfriend.
"Drugs and alcohol have ruined me. I just want to turn my life around," he told the court.
The decision has infuriated women's group leaders in Germany.
"This was a young girl being taken advantage of by a violent, older man," said one.
