A grumpy pensioner who shot his noisy neighbour told police in Berlin, Germany: "I'd rather spend 10 years in jail than live next to him any more."
The gunman Hans-Jurgen Berger - had sprung an ambush on his 41-year-old victim as he returned to their apartment block after walking his dog, a court heard.
After shooting his neighbour Matthias Scholler - in the stomach with a handgun, he then fired a volley of bullets at a car which had stopped to help him escape.
The court heard how the men fell out shortly after the victim - who survived the shooting - moved into the apartment block and faced a string of complaints about his noisy dog, loud music and slamming doors.
"There is a documented history of complaints and animosity which, unfortunately, had dire consequences," the gunman's lawyer told the court.
