A TV stunt show is being investigated by safety watchdogs in Germany after a contestant nearly drowned as he sat in a tank of water trying to win a 50,000 GBP prize.
The show - My Man Can - is due to win a prime time slot in Britain after ITV filmed a pilot earlier this year in Cologne, where the German version is made.
Male contestants' wives or partners bet on whether their men can win head to head contests with other hopefuls in a series of knock out rounds.
In a filming session last weekend wives gambled on how long their partners could hold their breath underwater in a giant glass tank.
But the live audience screamed in horror when one of the contestants - identified only as Alexander, 26 - slumped to the bottom of the tank after winning his round.
One guest told local media: "His opponent gave up after two minutes underwater. As Alexander tried to get out of the water he collapsed and just sunk to the bottom."
Male nurse Hubert Braun - who helped pull the stricken contestant to safety - said: "Water had got into his lungs and he was just lying lifeless at the bottom of the tank."
"I am a trained first aider and nurse and knew I had to help. I hit him with my fist hard on his chest. He then started to cough and all the water was released form his chest," he added.
Show spokesmen at network Sat 1 have refused to comment on the drama but one TV official said: "There is an inquiry into how this could have happened. The stakes are so high that people may be tempted to take stupid risks."
Alexander - who won the jackpot - said:"I quickly recovered and I'm pleased that they're still going to show the episode."
The show - also a huge hit in China - is due to transfer to ITV this year after The Only Way is Essex star Mark Wright and Melanie Sykes filmed a successful pilot.
