Two suspected Russian spies said to have been working undercover in Germany for more than 20 years have been charged with espionage, prosecutors have announced.
A man and a woman - said to be a married couple with a daughter- were arrested last October at their suburban home in Ballingen while the woman was caught in the middle of listening to coded messages.
The couple - identified only by their aliases Andreas and Heidrun A. - are said to have arrived in Germany in 1988 posing as Austrian nationals, a year before the Berlin Wall fell.
Prosecutors say they quickly set up a "middle-class existence to cover up their activity for the secret services."
But after the collapse of Soviet communism, it is claimed, the pair continued to spy on Germany, Nato and the EU receiving 100,000 GBP a year from their paymasters in Moscow.
"Until their arrest on October 18, 2011 they provided political-social information about general and security-relevant political aspects of relations between Germany, the EU and NATO to Russia," say prosecutors.
