Swanning About

Train passengers were left standing after the electricity was switched off so that fireman could rescue a swan at risk being electrocuted on the mainline station between Tiefstack and Billwerder Moorfleet in Hamburg, Germany.

The young swan had been spotted by passengers who raised the alarm with the local police who decided that the swan was at risk of being electrocuted by the 1200 V live wire lying next to the track.

Once the electricity was cut off police and firemen were allowed to go onto the track and drove the young swan towards a nearby allotment alongside the track where a gardener was able to grab it.

He then held on to the swan so that it could be handed over to rescuers and returned to the wild.

A search of the area a short while later discovered the swan's family in a nearby pond and it was reunited with its parents.

A police spokesman said: "We had several incidents involving drunken people near the train tracks at the weekend at least on this one occasion we know that alcohol did not play a role."
