Germans Make Hitler TV Series for UK

German film-makers are planning to bring Hitler to British TV screens by producing the world's first mini TV series detailing his life from 1914 to 1945.

Producer Nico Hofmann, 52, said that there were already enough films about Hitler on the market and enough documentaries but his project was the first one yet that would seek to turn the dictator's life into a mini TV series.

The production is mainly aimed at the British and American markets he said, and he wanted to have an international cast without saying yet who had been considered to play the role of the dictator and his wife Eva Braun.

Hofmann and his colleague Jan Mojto revealed that series would be over eight parts and added that the recent production on Erwin Rommel showed that it was possible to emotionalise the content without making those involved into heroes.

The producer has purchased the rights to the book "Hitler's first war" by the historian Thomas Weber as the basis for the mini-series and said that Weber had agreed to be an adviser for the production to make sure everything was as accurate as possible.

He said: "We were really glad to get the rights it represents absolutely the very latest in research into Hitler's life."

He added that they did not want to make Hitler into a cult figure but rather to demystify him.

Hofmann said that they believed Eva Braun would be chosen from the international marketplace when casting starts next year but they would prefer a German to play the dictator.
