Kraft Poison Horror

Thousands of people fled their homes after a cloud of poison gas leaked from a factory run by food giants Kraft near Hannover, Germany.

Factory workers and local residents were evacuated from an exclusion zone around the factory when toxic nitrous gasses began to billow from the factory after a chemical accident.

Nitric acid had mistakenly been poured into a tank containing sodium hydroxide solution during a cleaning process causing a potentially lethal chemical reaction.

People living within 1,500ft of the plant were ordered to leave their homes along with all factory workers, say police.

Hundreds of firefighters in bio-hazard suits were this morning (Tuesday) still at the plant amid fears that the overheated tank could explode.

Fire service spokesman Stephan Meier said: "We have to swap the specialists every 20 minutes, and each time we need new protective suits. We're running short of both suits and specialists."

Kraft - which also owns British chocolate brand Cadbury - makes cheese spreads and biscuits at the factory.
