The British man who taught Arnold Schwarzenegger to speak English so he could make a career for himself in Hollywood has met up again with his former best friend 44 years after they had a row and never spoke again over two girls.
Roger Field, 67, who is now retired and lives in Wiesbaden in Germany met the actor in 1968 and said that he had ended up meeting the actor for English lessons four times a week, as well as spending a lot of time in each other's homes as friends.
Now he has met his former pal again after travelling along to see him during the signing of his book "Total Recall" at a German book fair.
London-born Roger said that he had gone to Germany to visit his mother who was on holiday in Munich – where he met many new friends including an acquaintance of the actor. They had told him that Schwarzenegger was looking to improve his English so he could go to America and try and get a career as an actor, and Field had agreed to help.
He said: "Arnold is very intelligent , nice and considerate.
"I remember a lot of things about our friendship, he had a weird diet and at one stage tried to get me to eat cornflakes with raw eggs – I just couldn't manage it. We didn't go out in the evenings much – he was always in bed by 10.30 whereas I preferred to go out and enjoy the night life.
"I remember the first time I went out in a car he drove like a madman and almost had a crash and managed to turn the car 180 degrees – then he shoved his biceps out of the window and shouted at a pedestrian.
"We lost touch when he wanted me to go with him after he managed to pull two girls from the local fitness studio, they were really ugly and I was already in a relationship with a beautiful woman, Delores Hoffschneider, who then became my wife.
"He was the trainer and they were sort of groupies because he'd won the Mr Universe title the year before but they weren't good looking - far from it. The one he got pregnant, the housekeeper, was positively beautiful compared to them.
"I guess he felt snubbed, I was not annoyed with him but I told him that I wasn't up for going back to his place with the girls, it wasn't my thing, and he never spoke to me again – with Arnold Schwarzenegger you don't say no."
Two years later Schwarzenegger started his acting career with the film "Hercules in New York" and then went on to become Conan and the Terminator.
Field stayed in Germany where he got a job as a designer working on the Airbus interior and he said: "It would have been nice to spend a bit more time with him this time when we met, but he was surrounded by bodyguards, and there were so many other people there that we didn't have time to do much more than shake hands.
"I think it's a shame he has had such a hard time lately, I still regard him as a friend and he was always really nice to me."
