Fat Blue Liar

Red-faced police have apologised to a driver for nicking him for speeding after he proved their mobile radar trap had been sent haywire by an overweight WPC.

Lawyer Jens Tasche, 37, showed that readings from the speed gun set up in the back of an unmarked parked car were unreliable because the roly-poly policewoman was sitting on the bonnet.

"I could see the trap from a long way off," said Tasche of Dormagen, Germany.

"It's a notorious stretch of road for police ambushes so I checked my speed and it was dead on the 50 kph limit," he added.

But when he was still flashed by the camera, the attorney turned around and used his phone to snap the burly WPC perched on the police bonnet.

So when a speeding fine notice arrived, Tasche sent them a copy of the photo and a scientific explanation of why the speed camera gave a false reading.

"It's all about speed and mass, and believe me there was quite a bit of mass," he said.

"If someone that heavy is sitting on the bonnet it means the camera will be triggered at a lower speed," he added.

A police spokesman confirmed: "The ticket has been cancelled."
