Milking It
Angry mums have accused black marketeers of creaming off a fortune from bulk buying baby milk formula from supermarket shelves in Germany, and flogging it to China.
The bulk buying means mothers are all too often finding stores sold out, a problem which has now been highlighted in local media with a call for action.
Chinese mothers refuse to touch home produced formula after a series of poisoning scandals and will only use imported brand names made in Europe.
One German manufacturer Milupa has even banned exports, to preserve stocks for domestic customers.
Spokesman Stefan Stohl said: "We do not sell directly to China and we don't export. In fact it is exactly opposite – we are trying to stop this happening.
"But as a result Chinese are buying their supplies directly from the stores and then sending the product back to China," he added.
The firm has increased production by a third, but still can't keep up with demand.
Milupa chairman Ludovic Galand, 48, said: "We make our product exclusively for babies and small children in Germany. But we can understand the worries of other parents and we are working under extreme pressure to try and come up with a solution to the situation."
