Zoo visitors get the hump
Visitors to a German zoo have got the hump with keepers after complaining that a newborn baby camel has no hump.
Baby "Caliph" who weighs 88lbs and already stands at just over three foot after he was born a week ago has still not had time to get his two humps.
Keeper Kristian Bergmann said: "There is a popular misconception that camels have humps to store water. In fact the hump is a fatty deposit that keeps the animal alive when it treks over long distances without food - and obviously a baby camel needs time to build up those fat deposits.
"But we keep getting smart visitors telling us to give the camel a drink or suggesting the baby is a crossbred with one of the other animals. He will get his humps eventually but it will take time."
The Camel's mother "Samira" meanwhile is taking it all in her stride and is delighted with her new foal, who was born after a 13 month pregnancy which is normal for camels. Baby "Caliph" has fitted in well with the other camels in the group and will eventually have two humps like his parents - as opposed to dromedary camels that have only one.
