Boris Becker

How Boris Becker Was Brougt Low by Cheap TV stunt

Three-time Wimbledon tennis ace Boris Becker has been accused of making himself into a laughing stock by taking part in a cheap publicity stunt this weekend to promote his new book "Life Is Not a Game". The stunt included having a giant bow with two fly swats strapped to his head to play table tennis.

Stern magazine said that from a tennis idol he had become an idiot, and described the appearance as "one of the greatest comedowns ever - in full view of the world".

The background to the appearance was that in the Becker book, as well as adding details about his affair in a broom cupboard of a trendy London restaurant in 1999 in which he fathered a child while cheating on his pregnant wife Barbara Feltus, Becker also took the opportunity to write unflattering things about his Ex fiance Sandy Meyer-Woelden, 30. He also gave away intimate details of their relationship.

The revelations put him at odds with top German comedian Oliver Pocher, 35, who was later married to Mayer-Woelden, and the pair then publicly criticised each other over twitter.

Pocher and his wife are still married although they are currently on a trial separation but nevertheless Pocher leapt to her defence against Becker saying in twitter: "I wouldn't advise you to take on a Pocher. And as long as my wife continues to carry my name then you should think twice about it."

The accusations back and forth were branded a cheap PR stunt that culminated this weekend with a bizarre TV duel on Pocher's show on German TV station RTL that Becker fans and former tennis colleagues said was simply embarrassing.

They said that the man who in the 80s was the idol of all tennis fans the world over had made himself into a laughing stock in front of millions.

In the show he had vegetables thrown at him, had a giant bow strapped to his head fitted with two fly swatters in which he had to pay table tennis and even dragged his wife Lilly, 34, onto the show with him.

Fellow tennis stars like Claudia Kohde-Kilsch, 49, who in 1987 was a Wimbledon winner in the doubles together with Helena Sukova and once played mixed doubles with Boris said she felt sorry for him that he felt it necessary to get involved in something like that.

She is now a spokesman for a left-wing political party and said: "I have known him since he was 12. He was my sporting hero and he was a hero for the entire country.

"It really causes me enormous pain that his fantastic sporting achievements are being completely ruined by what he is doing now. 90% of people say he's just making himself into an idiot.

"By turning up on the Pocher show he simply delivered himself to the bigmouth on a silver plate. If it was me in his place I'd want the ground to open up and swallow me up, but it doesn't seem to disturb him."

The stupid costume that seems to have been the highlight of the show and about which all Germany is talking was designed by the Cologne-based costume designer Hans van Almsick.

He said: "If everyone is talking about it than I must've done a good job."

And the result, Becker lost the fly swat table tennis, and the overall playoff, and, it seems from the pictures and the comments, his self respect.
